Dino Crisis - SJBMCPRS Diagnosis

The original Dino Crisis was effectively a Resident Evil that was too different to be part of the series, similar to how the original Devil May Cry was developed to be Resident Evil 4 but was too different and remodelled as the game we know today. Dino Crisis is dated, crude and suffers from the same flaws as the Resident Evil games before it, and yet its undeniably memorable and good. Dino Crisis left such a mark that two (2) sequals came in subsequent years, and became its own series. Arguably Dino Crisis 2 is as good as its predecessor, if not better given that the gameplay is fluid and allows effortless waves of dino hunting.

And then Dino Crisis 3 happened... Its not terrible, but its bland, stoic, baffling, and then there's the forsaken camera. The camera and the symmetric layout in Dino Crisis 3 is its greatest weakness like the camera is in Castlevania 64; I personally find it disorientating and I doubt I am the only one. Another nail in its gigantic space coffin is it was exclusive to the Xbox console only, there was no PS2 version, which wouldn't have made the game in general any better but if it were available on more than one (1) console, it would've at least sold more and be more profound.

And so the Dino Crisis series was exinct, minus the spinoff G-Con 2 shooter Dino Stalker for PS2. Years later fans call upon for a Dino Crisis 4, or a remake of the original. Its July 2014 and still the cries from fans fall upon deaf ears.

I however believe that Dino Crisis can be revived as either a remake in the same vein as the Nintendo GameCube remake of Resident Evil, or rebooted whilst following the same settings as the original Dino Crisis. Why I think this? Simple...! It will appeal to gamers who are fans of the series or are fans of survival horror but are tired of the numerous zombie shooters and sell. Dinosaur hunting will be fresh once more, and with the advances made in games these days; Dino Crisis can be made to look and play like a triple A blockbuster without the millions supposedly put in like in Call of Duty games. The fact that Regina is a playable costume in the recent Dead Rising 3 known as "Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX Plus Alpha" means that Dino Crisis isn't as extinct as the T-Rex yet...even if its a shameless plug-in to bring life into Dead Rising 3.

Oddworld New & Tasty is a tremendous example of how an old game can be brought into the so-called next generation of gaming while maintaining the context and style of the original Abe's Oddysee. If a developer and publisher like Capcom can make tremendous and ambitious games like Resident Evil while still catering to fans of Mega Man; then why shouldn't Dino Crisis be revived in the same vein as Oddworld, or Halo 2 later this year?I still play all three main entities of the Dino Crisis series and I'd be delighted to finally play the original Dino Crisis in the UK on my PlayStation Vita; however I think there is a greater potential and opportunity if Dino Crisis was rebuilt and allowed to develop into a revived series.

With superior graphics, more dinosaurs, more gore, and perhaps even an element of weather changing; the original Dino Crisis would make a promising remake. I however would prefer if more effort were made into character devolment and voicing, as well as a additional true ending which could directly feed into a remaded Dino Crisis 2.

Out of all the characters; Regina is the most noteworthy due to her status as playable protagonist in both Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2, she is a calm, focused and witty badass due to the inhuman and non-excistant way she interacts with the majority of her opponents. With some additional context and plot settings, Regina can be all that she is remembered for and more and play a central role in all Dino Crisis games. With the inclusion of time travel mentioned throughout the series, it wouldn't be utterly out of the question if Regina were the mother of Sonya, the female prtoagonist of Dino Crisis 3 and had a role in a remade Dino Crisis 3. With the original Dino Crisis; I believe a little backstory between Regina, Gail, and Rick will work wonders, perhaps even establish a more relatable relationship between the trio. I like to imagine Regina and Gail are relatively friendly and professional to one another while close enough to through harmless remarks at each other. Then you have Rick who is new to the squad and is more human and inexperienced, creating moments of conflict with Gail (as seen in the original Dino Crisis). Like the player, Regina can be professionally neutral and decide which idea to follow whenever Rick and Gail go about there own ways, but have more input when the moment of conflict takes place and legitmately follow whoever side she takes. An example of this is when Gail chooses to go toe-to-toe with the dinosaurs after releasing the lock that trapped him and Regina in the lab, it would be nice if Regina actually worked in tandem with Gail to blast through the dinosaurs instead of backtracking towards the destinatioon to fiind Gail had already found Dr.Kirk. Sticking with Gail, its absurd to think that Gail after being critically injured can move fast enough that Regina can't keep up and finds Gail cornering an uninjured Dr.Kirk, it would make more sense if Regina were to go after Dr.Kirk along with Gail and aid the critically injured Gail on-screen similar to how Leon aids Helena in the Resident Evil 6 Prologue. Out of the three (3) major characters; Rick is the least I like, simply because he is nothing more than a computer hacker; Rick carries a big rifle but only fires it once to attract Regina's attention while being chased by the T-Rex. The conflicts between Rick and Gail should be more aggressive and lead to Gail, or Regina (through a choice of action(s) inspired by Mass Effect) to hit Rick to knock some sense into him.

The additional and true ending I indicated earlier could be straightforward; having activated Third Energy, and escaped the final chase by the T-Rex, Regina can inadvertantely slip off the watercraft or helicopter depending on which path taken and get caught in the perimeter of Third Energy as it shifts in time. thus meaning Regina is MIA, and not seen until the opening of a remade Dino Crisis 2 in 2010 where Dylan and his squad travel to find and salvage Third Energy and in the process find Regina. At first Regina can be imprisoned by Dylan and his squad so that she can be interrogated for answers as to where Third Energy is and her involvment, but then velociraptors and subsequently a T-Rex attack the camp and kill everyone except Dylan, David and Regina; leaving Dylan no choice but to accept Regina's help and freeing her before the T-Rex gets too close.

With this additional ending in mind serving as a prolougue in a remade Dino Crisis 2, Dino Crisis 2 would be alterd so that Dylan doesn't trust Regina and vise-versa, along with similar tweaks and enchancments made in the original's remake. Following DC2, Dino Crisis 3 and be remade with several sweeping changes:

  • Events take place in a fictional 2031 instead of 2548, 21 years after the events of Dino Crisis 2.
  • U.N. Ozymandias is smaller and far less stoic.
  • An on-screen map showing in 3D displays current location and destination whilst in gameplay instead of having to pause the game to view the map.
  • Varying camera angles including an over the shoulder perspective.
  • Sonya, the daughter of Regina; is the lone playable protagonist, who dislikes her mother and wants to surpass her mother's accomplicments and prove herself to her squad.
  • Patrick, Jacob and McCoy are surviving allies at first but all perish in the first (1st) mission (think of the Virtious Mission on MGS3 being a prolouge to Operation Snake Eater).
  • The U.N. Ozymandias is in fact the housing vessel for Third Energy which disappears following inproper use, and then reappears having shifter through time and brought dinosaurs into the ship, hence the lack of response from the ship because the dinosaurs have killed everyone on board.
  • Regina, the mother of Sonya; is pulled out of retirment to supervise the second (2nd)operation given the failure of the first (1st) mission and that there are dinosaurs onboard, of which Regina would be an expert on fighting dinosaurs and can pass expertise onto Sonya in a supervising manner.
  • Sonya goes about the second (2nd) operation alone with enhanced techniques and technology to aid her mission of securing Third Energy and bring U.N. Ozymandias back to command.
  • Mysterious survivors appear onboard on the second (2nd) operation, not present on the first (1st), as well as an antagonist who uses Third Energy, and creates hybrid dinosaurs that are harder to kill.
  • Enhanced WASPs, jetpacks, weapons and customisable attires and equipment.
These are several ideas for a remade Dino Crisis 3 that follows the story of the supposed remade preceding Dino Crisis entities. Admittedly I cannot think of a Dino Crisis 4 in this regard, though it would be nice if a remake of the original Dino Crisis were made in the first (1st) place instead of just being speculation. This post is just my outlook on the Dino Crisis series and what could be done in theory to revive the once promising series. Even though this is speculation and ideas on my behalf, I nontheless believe it is time for the series to roar back into life and for Capcom to redeem itself after the failing of Dino Crisis 3 and Resident Evil games of late.

Maybe this will happen, perhaps some of my ideas will strike acord and become reality, maybe nothing happens and Dino Crisis remains a cult classic buried year after year, after year. Only time will tell. Until next time, see ya!
